Freedom, internet´s essence

Note: My other texts are in portuguese, but this is a universal theme, so I wrote in english for everybody to read, understand and...find it easily at Google. =)

On university, people have discussions about many things and themes. One of them is about internet and how it changed the world. And one of the main ideas is "before Internet, just a little families were controlling media. It was media from some people to many people. Now, with Internet, it´s from many people to many people". But some companies are trying to change this. They want people to pay to create their sites and blogs, to access sites. They are trying to change the most marvelous thing in Internet - its freedom, that no other media have. The way people have to express themselves in blogs, microblogs, sites, Youtube, and others.Well, Internet used to be even more free. When I started using it, in 1996, just a few sites asked to pay for access, or for a membership. One year later, this number has increased a lot. Why? Money. Companies discovered that they could use internet to earn money and tryed to change it.Did it work? No. Users found a way to enter in this 'pay' sites, asking for passwords with hackers or visiting similar sites that had the same material, but for free. It was like internet freedom itself was fighting against the ones that wanted it to disappear. But it didn´t disappeared. It was the same with Napster, mp3 and similar programs. Internet freedom is so marvelous and has so many possibilities that users always find a way to keep it alive. It´s the best thing on this media: the possibility that you can express yourself, for free and for many, without anyone telling you if you can or cannot do it, when, on which time, and in which ways. It´s marvelous, and until now, companies have lost the battle against it. Musical industry have changed a lot, trying to incorporate themselves on this. Copyright companies have tryed to remove youtube videos, and other video sites, but users have reacted, and internet freedom won. They put so many copies and it was impossible to remove all of them. It´s marvelous, it´s wonderful, and it´s the best thing on this media. I understand companies need to earn money to survive, but there are another ways. They can use online marketing, for example. If they try to stop the freedom itself, they´re just going to lose more and more money, and have fewer site clickings than other free sites.Internet freedom is like the essence of the internet, the way it maintain itself, and it shouldn´t and won´t disappear. For the future of this new and fantastic media.
